Yin yoga is a feminine practice which balances yang energy through learning how to surrender. Through targeting the fascial system and applying appropriate stress to the ligaments, joints, and bones, compressive poses are held over long periods of time to help the body open. Poses are held anywhere from 3 – 20 minutes. This promotes cleansing, micro tears to connective tissue, and pressure on bony structures. During the healing process the body recognizes the stress that has been applied to the tissue and it heals and compensates for the experience. The results are stronger ligaments, joints, bones and clearer energy channels.
Restorative yoga is designed to slowly and gradually open the body while prompting the parasympathetic nervous system to come online and initiate a healing response. Unlike Yin, it facilitates passive stretch without tension or strain on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Poses are held anywhere from 10-20 minutes with the use of heavily supportive props to minimize energy and musculature expenditure. It is a slow and grounded practice that allows the practitioner to go into a deep restful state where healing and injury prevention can take place.
Mindfulness invites you to be present at what you do and experience at every moment. This gives life a different color: it comes in fuller and more directly. You pay more attention to what you are doing and what is happening around you. Even small things can prove worthwhile if you are open to it.
